Recommendations from a former Scene Kid
Tight Pants and bangs not required
You new jacks think you have it good with your TikToks and Rednote, but Myspace was the shit. The top 8 feature was no joke and friendships were ended over it. It’s all so cringe now, but I love revisiting music that I found through it. Lemme take you on a journey of what high school really sounded like.
Dr Acula Shocker on Shock Street
Dr Acula songs were pretty much jokes and this one is definitely about tough guy hardcore jocks. The style from this era is atrocious and the sad thing is that you probably get crowd killed by some dude that used to dress like this.
KILLWHITNEYDEAD Put A sock in It
Here’s to pretty girls and breaking the law! These dudes used samples from American Dad, American Psycho and more. Their songs are pretty much composed of audio samples and brutal breakdowns- heavenly.
IWRESTLEDABEARONCE Tastes like Kevin Bacon
Tickles the brain. Hurts the head, but brain feels good. Chaos just for the sake of it. I guess this was meme music back then?
Giddy Up Gansta A Hunger Well Satisfied
This song seamlessly just flows between styles and it’s just ignorant for the sake of being ignorant. From a time when the stances were low and pants tight as fuck.
Underminded It’s Kinda Like a Body Bag
Those military caps had a death grip on dudes in their 30’s. Hell yeah. Why don’t people rip off bands like this? It’s always some tough guy shit or nu metal.
Aiden Die Romantic If you’re DJ’ing one of those Emo nights and you don’t end with this song you need to find another job. Preferably one that pays. Victory Records was GOATED and fucked it all up. Whatever this song is tight.
The Blood Brothers Vital Beach
I dunno. Blood Brothers are hard to explain. Theatrical and explosive. Abrrassive yet melodic. They play with elements of hardcore, avant gard, cabaret and electronic. They’re more artistic expression than anything and I’m glad that I got to see them live when Young Machetes dropped. Vital Beach is just an spazzstic and catchy track.
PIG DESTROYER PISS ANGEL
Prowler in the yard is a twisted and violent love story wrapped up in a punishing grindcore package. It’s hard to choose one song, as this is really an album that you’re supposed to ingest in one sitting, but the tight and technical drumming, poetic lyirics and heavy sludge and doom influences create a cathartic experience. I included this song for the ambient poem in the end, but you should really check out the whole album. Pig Destroyers whole discography really.
